We are all members of one social network or the other. Typically, you use these social networks for professional or personal reasons. You are probably using these to keep up with your friends, share pictures, videos and generally learn about the people you meet. Let me introduce you to another social site with a commendable mission: “help reduce the impact waste is having on the planet by trading the things we no longer use to get the things we want.” The site is SwitchPlanet.com.

Members currently have the ability to trade DVDs, CDs, Books and Video Games. Soon members will have the ability to trade clothing, electronics and more. Membership is free. As a member you save money by trading the things you have but no longer use. Members are also given an option to donate every time they receive something on the SwitchPlanet.com website.

Founded by Chris Samarin, the motto of SwitchPlanet.com is “Use more … waste less”. A very commendable venture for a worthwhile cause. The money you donate via the site goes towards: American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, The Nature Conservancy, American Cancer Society and Child’s Play Charity. It is your choice as a member whether to donate or no.

You can become a member and check out the features the site has to offer. What do you stand to lose?
